It doesn’t take a lot of effort to make positive changes in your indoor air quality (IAQ). For example, simply removing common sources of contamination can do wonders for your interior environment. Another way you can effectively improve your IAQ is by using the right filters for your heating and air conditioning system.
You’ll find no shortage of air filters at your home improvement store. The real challenge is figuring out which filter among all the different types, ratings and brands will provide the greatest benefits to your home. Let our experienced HVAC technicians offer you a handy guide for choosing air filters.
What Is a MERV Rating?
MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. It’s a scale of measurement for filtration ability designed by ASHRAE, or the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers. MERV numbers range from 1 to 16, with 1 being the low end and 16 the high end. There are also ratings for 17 to 20, but products that carry these numbers are typically ultra high-efficiency filters and aren’t commonly used in regular households.
Understanding MERV Ratings
MERV measures the smallest particle that a filter can effectively block. The measurements are expressed in microns or micrometers. This means it’s a millionth of a meter. To illustrate this scale, a strand of human hair is typically 50 microns in diameter.
- MERV 1 to 6 – Low-end filters which block contaminants 10 microns or bigger. Fiberglass-spun and reusable filters are often rated within this range.
- MERV 7 to 13 – This is the minimum rating recommended for residential HVAC use. These filters can remove particulates from mold and mildew spores to smoke particles. They can even block some harmful bacteria such as Legionella.
