A well-cared-for HVAC system is key to maintaining good indoor air quality, and your best defense against fall allergies. In this blog, All Weather shares a look at how you can optimize your heating and cooling systems to combat fall allergies.
Keep the Air Ducts Clean
The air duct system supplies conditioned air into your rooms and takes away stale air through return registers. Sometimes fine particles make their way into the air ducts and get trapped in seams. While ducts don’t get clogged like air filters do, particles can accumulate over time. This is why you should have your duct system cleaned every three to five years or so.
During the typical air duct cleaning process, the entire duct network is sealed and subjected to negative air pressure, creating a vacuum within the system. A mechanically-operated rotating brush agitates dust and debris within the ducts and sends them into waiting dust bags. Once the ducts are clean, a liquid or aerosol sealant is applied and allowed to cure. Disinfectants may also be sprayed into the ducts to minimize bacterial growth.
Replace the Air Filters
Air filters trap dust and other particles that may trigger allergies. This is one of the reasons why HVAC companies like us always remind our customers about the importance of regularly changing air filters in home ventilation systems. Air filters need to be replaced every three months, or as often as once a month during seasons of heavy usage.
If you have a new HVAC system or have recently switched to a different type of air filter, inspect it once a month, make a note of how fast the filter gets clogged and replace it as needed. In addition to helping prevent fall allergies, clean air filters also aid in keeping HVAC systems running smoothly and efficiently.
